About Your New Citrus - Lemon 'Lisbon'
Citrus limon 'Lisbon' is the most productive lemon for the home garden, carrying heavy crops of classic thick-skinned juicy fruit with a main flush in winter and scattered fruit for much of the rest of the year. It is more cold and heat tolerant than Eureka or Meyer.
The Lisbon Lemon grows to 3 to 6 metres tall and 3 to 4.5 metres wide at 40 to 60 centimetres per year, and is easily held at 2 metres with annual pruning. Glossy evergreen foliage and fragrant white spring flowers make it ornamental enough to sit in a front garden rather than being hidden out the back.
Lisbon wants full sun, free-draining soil and regular feeding through the growing season. It is frost sensitive, so in cold districts plant it against a north-facing wall or grow it in a pot that can be moved to shelter over winter.
Frequently Asked Questions
About Lisbon Lemon
How big does a Lisbon Lemon tree grow?
Lisbon grows to 3 to 6 metres tall and 3 to 4.5 metres wide if left unpruned, and is easily held at 2 metres with annual trimming, which keeps fruit within reach.
When does Lisbon Lemon fruit?
The main crop ripens through winter, with scattered fruit produced across much of the rest of the year. Lisbon is one of the heaviest-cropping lemon varieties available.
How is Lisbon different from Eureka or Meyer?
Lisbon is more tolerant of both cold and heat than Eureka, and produces a true tart lemon unlike Meyer, which is a sweeter lemon and mandarin cross. Lisbon is also the heaviest cropper of the three.
Can a Lisbon Lemon be grown in a pot?
Yes. Use a large pot with premium citrus mix in full sun. Potted citrus need consistent watering and regular feeding, as nutrients leach quickly from containers.
Is Lisbon Lemon frost tolerant?
It is frost sensitive, particularly when young. In cold districts plant against a north-facing wall for reflected warmth, or grow it in a pot that can be sheltered through winter.
How should I feed a lemon tree?
Feed with a dedicated citrus fertiliser in early spring and again in late summer. Yellowing leaves usually indicate a nitrogen or trace element deficiency rather than a watering problem.
When should I prune a Lisbon Lemon?
Prune lightly after the main harvest, removing dead wood, crossing branches and any growth below the graft. Lemons fruit on new wood, so light annual pruning keeps cropping strong.
